Down most of the night, Cuero clawed their way back and kept the game close down the stretch before coming up short to the Giddings Buffaloes in non-district play April 6, 6-5 in eight innings.
Cole Payne struck out six batters in the first two innings before Giddings struck for a run in the third and two more in the fourth. Cuero gained the lead in the bottom of the fourth on four runs, as Conner Halepaska started the rally with a leadoff double.
Giddings pushed two runs across in the seventh, but Cuero responded again. Clinging to their final out, Payne reached on a hit by pitch. Following Jared Barta’s walk, Bailey Opiela came in to run for Barta. Two wild pitched allowed them to advance and Payne to score the tying run, as Opiela was thrown out at home to force extra innings.
